Satellite Dish Covers
A Satellite dish cover is designed to prevent loss of reception and damage to your dish caused by sun and bad weather. Dish Network dishes are made to the highest standards and only the best quality materials and components including the finishes are used. Remember it comes with a life time warranty. A satellite dish cover is, therefore not necessary unless you are subject to extreme environments.
Snow Build Up
In severe conditions particularly when the dish has a slightly flat alignment, snow builds up in the bottom of the dish or the whole dish become encapsulated in snow or ice. The LNB or receptor in the dish can also become covered in snow. If snow has built up on the dish or LNB, wait for it to melt. Alternativelly, if you can safely get to your dish, lightly brush it off with a broom making sure you do not move the LNB or alter the alignment of the dish.
Hail Damage In the case of hail, hail stones may dent light weight metal dishes. If the dish is a fiberglass construction the hail will either fracture, penetrate or go right through the dish. Hail may also damage the LNB electronics in the receiver part of the dish.
Sun and Ultraviolet Damage
An ancilliary benefit is that satellite dish covers restrict damaging heat and ultraviolet rays from deteriorating the reflective surface of your satellite and from focusing unwanted heat on your dish's electronics. They are generally not required unless you live in extreme weather environments. A good satellite dish cover provides protection without any loss of signal strength. Satellite dish covers start around $45.
