Weather effect on Dish Network and Direct TV satellite dishes
Weather can interfere with your reception! Generally Television reception from either Dish Network Or Directv is extremely reliable right through the year and nationwide. During heavy rain, hail or snowfall, some DIRECTV and DISH NETWORK customers may experience a temporary loss of picture quality. This phenomenon may occur if the actual satellite dish or low noise block converter (LNB) accumulates too much wet snow. When snow accumulates on the dish, the service is not lost but the strength of the signal can be weakened by the snow's water content. This "signal fall-off" occurs when water content is at its highest. During colder winter months, when snow is drier, dishes usually do not experience such problems, even in the event of is significant snow buildup.
So what can you do? The logical thing to do of course is to wait for the bad weather to pass and your signal should return to normal. If snow or hail has built up on the dish or LNB, wait for it to melt. Alternatively if you can safely get to your dish, lightly brush it off with a broom.
If the signal doesn't return, try re-setting your receiver by turning it off, unplugging it for at least 15 seconds and then plugging it back in.
As a final alternative, you may consider installing an accessory designed to prevent snow buildup. DIRECT TV and Dish Network have successfully tested several different products, including spray-on coatings, dish covers and LNB covers. You may also heat your satellite dish with one of thr propietary dish heaters which work very well and are quite reliable.
Good satellite dish covers start at around $50.00. (You can get cheap covers for about $20 but they don't really last). Storm covers cost around $55 and satellite dish heaters are available from around $45.00. Try Skyvision if you are looking for acessories to protect your dish from snow, rain, hail, ultra violet and any other weather related problem. Spray on coatings are harder to find but you can always try a domestic kitchen baking spray. Spray on coatings may attract dust and require cleaning and respraying.
